The Green Bay Packers have one of the best quarterbacks of all-time in Aaron Rodgers. He's clearly their starter basically until he decides he doesn't want to anymore.

However, that leaves the backup role up for grabs. According to Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst, the battle for backup between DeShone Kizer and Tim Boyle is ‘really close.'

It's hard to argue with Gutekunst here. At times, both have shined this preseason. Kizer stood out in the first week, going 8-for-13 with 102 yards and a touchdown. Boyle went 3-for-5 with 40 yards and two touchdowns that same game though.

Boyle got the heavier reps the next week and had another strong performance, going 12-for-21 with 107 yards and a touchdown. Kizer went 5-for-10 with 70 yards.

Finally, Boyle took a big leap in week three. He went 16-for-25 with 191 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Kizer went 4-for-7 with 27 yards and one interception.

Based on the stats, Boyle's in the lead by a decent margin. However, he's gotten a much heavier workload and got to play against the backups in each of the first two weeks of the preseason. Those are likely things the GM and coaching staff are taking into consideration.

While Boyle has the upper hand in stats this preseason, Kizer has the experience factor. Boyle's never attempted a pass in a regular-season NFL game. Although his numbers accompanying them aren't great, Kizer has 518 pass attempts in his young career.

The race for backup probably won't be absolutely resolved until the end of the preseason. However, the hopes are pretty simple for the Packers. Whoever gets that role still won't be playing.
