Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews wishes that quarterback Aaron Rodgers could return right now to try and save their rapidly sinking season.

The linebacker recently observed Rodgers go through his rehab process and was left awed at the quarterback’s progress. At the same time, Matthews feels some regret, thinking that the Packers might have just opted to keep Rodgers on the active roster instead of putting him on the injured reserve list.

Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

The Green Bay Packers linebacker got an up-close look at the quarterback's rehab from his broken collarbone and came away with this revelation: “I think we probably should have kept him off IR.”

With his IR designation, the soonest Rodgers could play is on Dec. 15 against the Carolina Panthers on the road. By then, the Packers hope that interim quarterback starter Brett Hundley would have done enough to keep the team in contention for a playoff spot.

The Packers’ season has been on a downward spiral ever since Aaron Rodgers got his clavicle injured back in Week 6’s 23-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Since then, the Packers have gone 1-4, a stretch that includes their 31-28 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday. The defeat at the hands of the Steelers dropped Green Bay to 5-6. Although the Packers are currently out of the playoff picture, they could still make it to the postseason likely via a wild-card berth, but they have to start winning games in bunches soon.

Green Bay's next game will obviously be crucial to anything positive happening.
