Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari’s left ankle injury doesn’t appear to be too serious after all. After initial tests, his injury has been diagnosed as a mere sprain, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

While Bakhtiari will likely miss time in practice as well as preseason, the early indications are that he be available in time for the team’s season opener against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 9, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

Bakhtiari was carted off the field after suffering the ankle injury at practice Saturday. Although, the sense within the locker room shortly after the injury was that it was not serious.

This is obviously great news for the Packers, who have already suffered a significant injury to a key starter in training camp after Jake Ryan suffered a torn ACL. They’ve also just had their other starting tackle, Bryan Bulaga, cleared for practice following his own torn ACL.

Bakhtiari has been an integral member of the Packers’ offensive line since his arrival in Green Bay in 2013. He’s played in 74 out of a possible 80 games — all starts — in his five seasons with the team and has also been named second-team All-Pro twice.

Kyle Murphy filled in for Bakhtiari at left tackle after he left practice. Should Bakhtiari suffer an unforeseen setback with his ankle sprain, Murphy will likely get time protecting Aaron Rodgers’ blindside.
