For the first time in his career, star wide receiver Dez Bryant finds himself in the free agent after being released by the Dallas Cowboys after eight seasons. He has become the most intriguing talent available in the open market that could be a major impact player wherever he decides to land.
The amount of interest in him could be far smaller than he had anticipated, but there will be teams that express their interest in bringing him aboard. One of these possibilities could be the Green Bay Packers, which he had shot down as being a legitimate option for him because of the past history against them, according to Mike Fisher of CBS 247 Sports.
“It wouldn't seem right,” Dez tells me, smiling. “Too much history.”
The history that Bryant is suggesting is the controversial non-catch play in the 2014 divisional playoff round game against Green Bay. It is clearly something that still bothers the 29-year-old that it didn't get ruled that he caught the ball in what could have been the game-winning reception.
Although this would make it difficult for him to join the Packers, it would possibly give the best chance to win to play with arguably the best quarterback in the league in Aaron Rodgers while be playing alongside All-Pro tight end Jimmy Graham, and wide receivers Davante Adams and Randall Cobb. This assortment of receiving options along with the opportunity to become Rodgers' primary target could all become quite appealing while potentially giving Green Bay one of the most potent offenses in the league.
The Packers currently possess just more than $13 million in salary cap space, which could be enough to offer him a reasonable contract offer in free agency. Bryant's interest in joining Green Bay may be limited at this point, but the organization is certainly a potential destination that could creep into the conversation.
