The Green Bay Packers have officially fired head coach Mike McCarthy.

Green Bay suffered its eighth loss of the season on Sunday after falling 20-17 at home to the previously 2-9 Arizona Cardinals.

Joe Philbin has been named the team's interim head coach while they search for McCarthy's replacement.

Here's the official statement from CEO Mark Murphy:

“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately,” Murphy said. “Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field. We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”

Green Bay will miss the playoffs for the second straight season, and despite McCarthy leading the team to a Super Bowl eight years ago, it wasn't enough to overcome the Packers' struggles in recent years.

He had nine playoff appearances during his tenure, but he was unable to make significant strides despite having Aaron Rodgers under center.

The team will host the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday.
