The Green Bay Packers made a tough decision by cutting veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson. However, don’t expect them to do the same to another in Randall Cobb.

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers will likely keep Cobb now that Nelson and his hefty contract are no longer with the team.

Demovsky also notes that Cobb, who is in the last year of his deal and is set to earn $9.5 million, still could have been in contention to be cut had the Packers landed a top receiver. They reportedly had their eye on the top two wideouts on this year's free-agent market, Allen Robinson and Sammy Watkins.

However, Robinson eventually went to their NFC North-rival Chicago Bears and Watkins landed with the Kansas City Chiefs, so Cobb’s status with the team remained safe. The Packers also haven’t given any indication that they will ask Cobb to restructure his deal, although it is still possible that that could happen.

Cobb, 27, is coming off another somewhat disappointing year in 2017. He finished with 66 catches for 653 receiving yards, his lowest total while playing at least 15 games since his rookie year. He also had a down year in 2016, racking up just 60 catches for 610 yards in 13 games (10 starts).

With Nelson gone, the Packers will likely continue searching for more potential upgrades at wide receiver in free agency or the draft even with the addition of a terrific pass-catcher in tight end Jimmy Graham. But if they fail to find a better option, Cobb could come into the year as Aaron Rodgers’ No. 2 target on the outside behind Davante Adams.
