The Green Bay Packers are interested in Colorado draft prospect Evan Worthington.

Worthington is a 6-2, 212-pound safety who ran a 4.63 40 and had 17 bench reps at the NFL Combine.

His combine numbers suggest he has enough speed but is also strong enough to make it in the NFL. He possesses ideal size for the strong safety position and has good arm length (32.75).

He played at a high level for the Colorado Buffaloes in 2017, finishing with 87 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions, and a forced fumble. Worthington followed up a career year with a respectable 2018 season (41 tackles, one interception) despite battling concussions.

In 2016, he was suspended for violating team rules, which is the biggest red flag on his profile.

Here's what NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein had to say about Worthington:

“Versatile defensive back with the tools and traits for catch disruption as a future NFL starter. Worthington's value to teams could depend on where they project him since he's played all over the field. He has the size and athleticism to handle a variety of man-cover targets from the slot, but his length, ball skills and range could be coveted as a deep safety. He could use more toughness as a run defender, but his traits and skill level might make him a future starter if his football character doesn't backslide.”

As of now, the Packers' starting safeties are Tramon Williams and Kentrell Brice. Williams will be entering his 14th season in the NFL but is coming off a season when he struggled in his transition from cornerback to free safety. He finished with only 54 tackles and no interceptions after starting every game of the season.

Brice is coming off a poor season, finishing with 50 tackles and a sack. He played through an ankle injury and missed quite a few tackles throughout 2018. He has been a liability in coverage and the Packers could soon divorce him.

The Packers also have 30-year-old veteran Eddie Pleasant, who is scheduled to be a free agent. They also have 2017 second-round pick Josh Jones, who has been their box safety.

After trading Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Washington Redskins, the Packers are left with a safety group which did not have any interceptions. All of their safeties struggle in pass coverage. They are in need of playmakers in their defensive backfield. The Packers will keep close tabs on Worthington at his Pro Day.
