The Green Bay Packers picked up Kenny Clark's fifth-year option earlier this week and now it appears the next step for the two sides is to work out a long term extension.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Clark is part of the long-term plan for the Packers and it's expected an extension will be able to be reached.

No surprise that the Packers exercised the fifth-year option on DT Kenny Clark, as ESPN's Field Yates reported Wednesday morning. Just last week, GM Brian Gutekunst called Clark “a dominant player on the defensive front” and even though the Packers have invested heavily in that area both in free agency (Za'Darius Smith, Preston Smith) and in the draft (Rashan Gary, Kingsley Keke), Clark is a big part of the long-term plan. He's now locked up through at least 2020 and a contract extension is likely before then.

Last season, Clark missed the last three weeks after suffering an elbow injury, but the expectation was if the team made the playoffs he would have been able to come back. In the 13 games before being injured, he had 55 tackles and six sacks and was a force on the Packers defensive line.

Clark doesn't get a lot of attention because of how bad the Packers defense has been, but he is one of the better linemen in the league, and he is expected to be paid like it.

This extension might not get done until next season, but it doesn't appear that Clark will be getting to free agency.
