There was some criticism towards the Green Bay Packers when they drafted Rashan Gary in this year's draft. Despite the rumblings from the fans, Green Bay is delighted with Gary's development so far.

“Oh, without a doubt. We’re pleased with where he is,” Mike Pettine said Saturday at Lambeau Field.

The Packers selected Gary with the 12th overall pick in the draft out of Michigan. Throughout his collegiate career, Gary was used in various ways to find ways for him to get to the quarterback.

During his three seasons at Michigan, Gary had just 9.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss. Due to his lack of production in college, scouts and teams were wary of drafting the pass-rusher.

Coming into Green Bay, the rookie edge-rusher has had to adjust to switching to the outside linebacker position. In college, Gary spent most of his time as a defensive end in Michigan's base defense. Packers defensive coordinator, Mike Pettine, knows that Gary is a work in progress.

“Just teaching him the outside linebacker position, we knew that he was going to be a little bit of a work in progress. We’re teaching him all of it,” Pettine said. “There are some things he’s doing now he won’t be doing in the regular season. As we get closer, we’ll hone that down and get him in positions where he’s ready to excel.”

Earlier this offseason, the Packers shelled out a decent amount of money to improve their pass rush. Green Bay signed Za'Darius Smith and Preston Smith to provide them with a pair of sack artists off of the edge. Along with those guys, Green Bay is hoping to develop Gary into a difference-maker as well.
