According to an article from ESPN's Rob Demovsky, the Green Bay Packers (7-7) are re-signing backup quarterback Joe Callahan just two days after they cut him in order to make room for superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers' return from a broken right collarbone.

The Packers, who lost to the Carolina Panthers 31-24 in a hard-fought contest on Sunday, will be officially eliminated from playoff contention tonight if the Atlanta Falcons defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday Night Football. With that in mind, it could mean that the Packers are considering the possibility of shutting down Rodgers for the remainder of the season.

Mike McCarthy also had this to say:

Rodgers definitely showed a bit of rust during the loss to the Panthers, who improved their record to 10-4 in an attempt to keep up with the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South playoff race. Although he threw for 290 yards and three touchdown passes on Sunday, Rodgers made some very ill-advised throws for his standards and was intercepted three times in a game for the first time since 2009.

Per a postgame press conference video uploaded to the Packers' official team website:

“Just uncharacteristic plays. I'm disappointed with my performance today. I obviously didn't play very well,” Rodgers said on Sunday after the loss. “The shoulder felt fine. I mean, I felt good all week in practice. Just missed some throws. Obviously, I hold myself to high standards and this comes in well below those standards.”

Since the Packers' playoff hopes at this point are all but gashed, it would be a wise decision to shut down Rodgers and give more reps to quarterback Brett Hundley.

The Packers host the Minnesota Vikings (11-3) on Saturday night at Lambeau Field after their hated rivals clinched the NFC North division with a 34-7 beatdown of the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
