The Green Bay Packers are preparing to play in the final week of the season and they'll be a bit thinner in the secondary on Sunday. According to Lily Zhao, Green Bay has surprisingly released cornerback Tony Brown.

Brown has dealt with a heel injury over the past month and has been sidelined for four games. The second-year cornerback won't get a chance to return to the Packers though after being released by the team on Saturday.

Last season, Brown suited up in 11 games—starting in three of them—and tallied 34 tackles, five deflections, and two forced fumbles. As for this year, the young cornerback out of Alabama has spent most of his time on special teams.

But above all, Brown was known as one of the crucial players in the locker room. His presence in the locker room as Green Bay is getting ready to play in the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

With Brown heading to free agency, we could see expanded roles for Chandon Sullivan or Josh Jackson. Of course, Jaire Alexander, Kevin King, and Tramon Williams will continue to start at cornerback for the Packers.

The release of Brown comes at an interesting time with the Packers playing for a first-round bye in the playoffs on Sunday. In addition, Green Bay becomes even more scarce at the cornerback position ahead of the postseason.

At the least, maybe Brown's release is a sign that the team is preparing to sign someone or someone on injured reserve is nearing a return. If not, then the release of Brown comes at quite a peculiar time in the season.
