Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy hit fans with some hard truths in a column posted to the team website Saturday morning.

Murphy announced the Packers will not be holding training camp at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin, also noting–with the season coming so quickly–the team and the NFL do not have the luxury of being laissez-faire with respect to COVID-19:

With so much uncertainty, it has made sense that we have not made decisions until we absolutely have to. As we near the start of training camp, though (rookies will start practice on July 21 and veterans on the 28th), time is no longer on our side. We announced this week that we would not hold training camp at St. Norbert College for the first time in 63 years.

Of course, moving training camp locations is probably smart for the Packers.

The NFLPA has already advised against player-led workouts to avoid potentially large gatherings. It would seem somewhat hypocritical for teams to then open themselves up to fans as if camp were bing held under usual pretenses.

In reality, Murphy is spot on. The NFL recognizes the urgency of the situation, particularly given the recent spike in cases of COVID-19. While the league slashed the preseason in half partly to allow for a longer “ramp-up” period, it might also lend more flexibility in the event the virus continues to pose a threat to the integrity of the season.

For their part, the Packers are hoping for the opportunity to improve on a 2019 campaign in which they made it to the NFC Championship Game.
