Darnell Savage Jr. was the second first-round pick for the Green Bay Packers in the 2019 NFL Draft. They liked him so much that they trade the No. 30 overall pick and both of their fourth-round selections to move up nine spots to get him at No. 21. Now, Savage appears like a lock to be a starter in the secondary alongside Adrian Amos.

The Packers are in OTA's right now and new head coach Matt LaFleur is getting his first look at his new rookie safety. He has made his first comments on his new defensive playmaker.

Savage is going to be a monster for the Packers if he develops into his full potential. He hits hard, knows how to get in the passing lane, and has top-notch speed to do so. Green Bay has needed more playmaking from the safety position and they brought in two players who can do just that.

Last season at Maryland, Savage ended up recording 52 total tackles to go along with 5.5 tackles for a loss, four interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and two defended passes. Those numbers should excite LaFleur and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.

It will be interesting to see what kind of numbers the rookie safety puts up in 2019. Green Bay certainly hopes to get back into contention in the NFC after missing the playoffs two straight years. Savage is going to be a big part of deciding whether that happens.

Expect to see more information and comments come out of Green Bay about Savage. He has put his head down and gotten to work already, which is all you can ask from a rookie.
