The Green Bay Packers made headlines with the firing of head coach Mike McCarthy. His departure has raised questions regarding the alleged friction between him and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

There was plenty of speculation regarding the potential fractured relationship. However, according to Laura Okmin of the NFL on Fox, McCarthy shared some rather heartfelt words about Rodgers:

“My mistake was getting away from those conversations and I wanted to fix that this year. We’ve been connecting three times every week now. He added, “I feel the same about Aaron as a player that I always have …I’m so proud of him, but I’m even more impressed with him as a person. What he does outside of football is tremendous.”

It appears any notion of bad blood between the two may have been blown out of proportion. Although McCarthy's comments confirm that they had not been as close as they once were, it is clear that they shared a relationship that transcended football. The feeling is certainly mutual from Rodgers. Even the Packers' star quarterback admitted that he was surprised by the move. He has since tried to downplay any notion of ill-will between the two.

It is difficult to gauge what went wrong this season in Green Bay. However, it became evident that the time had come for a change. Rodgers will soon have to get acquainted with another head coach. Meanwhile, McCarthy should not have any trouble picking up a new coaching gig. Both men can take solace in the fact that they managed to enjoy plenty of success during their time together.
