For the first time in his three-year NFL career, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Hundley got the chance to get significant playing time last year after Aaron Rodgers went down with a broken collarbone. However, he showed he wasn’t quite ready for the big time. He went just 3-6 as a starter, completing 61 percent of his passes for 1,836 yards, with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Hundley’s disappointing play prompted the Packers to pick up DeShone Kizer this offseason to provide another backup option for Rodgers. But it seems as though Hundley has responded by stepping up his game, and head coach Mike McCarthy has taken notice, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.

“Fundamentals, foot work, decision-making,” McCarthy said when asked what Hundley worked on this offseason. “Just really going back and doing a better job of repping the fundamentals, the footwork, particular concepts whether it's in the gun or under center. Every quarterback has a profile, throwing mechanics, and this is the time of year really to focus in on the little things, and I feel Brett has taken a step this offseason.”

With Rodgers back healthy ready to reclaim his rightful place as the starter this season, neither Hundley nor Kizer figures to get much time on the field for the Packers. Nevertheless, the two will still be going all out in training camp and preseason to win that coveted first backup spot.

Hundley, who is on the final year of his rookie contract, will be hoping to showcase himself one more time before he hits free agency next offseason. But if McCarthy’s assessment that he has taken a step is accurate, Hundley could still earn another shot elsewhere if it doesn’t work out for him in Green Bay.
