Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers declared that he will play in Week 2 despite suffering a leg injury against the Chicago Bears which saw him carted off to the locker room. However, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy has pumped the brakes on such talk for the time being.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, McCarthy says “no decision has been made” as to whether Rodgers will face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

“I know Aaron wants to play, and is always driven to play, but that’s all I have for right now,” McCarthy said, via Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

It shouldn’t be too surprising to see McCarthy temper expectations about Rodgers’ status for the next game, especially after the quarterback's decisive-sounding statement shortly after their dramatic come-from-behind win over Chicago.

It’s still way too soon to determine whether or not Rodgers will actually be ready for the Vikings. While he may have felt good shortly after returning from his injury to lead the Packers' exhilarating come-from-behind win against the Bears, his knee might still react negatively in the coming days that would hinder his ability to play.

There’s not much sense in McCarthy and the Packers making a decision one way or the other about Rodgers’ availability this early in the week. They still have time on their side, so they'd be wise to wait and conduct more tests on Rodgers in the coming days before finally making a definitive judgment about his status against the Vikings.
