Green Bay Packers defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson sustained an ankle injury in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Wilkerson was carted off the field and into the locker room immediately after the injury.

The injury appeared serious as he got leg-whipped by teammate Kentrell Brice and couldn't put any pressure on his leg following the play.

The 28-year old Wilkerson was one of the Packers biggest free-agent signings this off-season.

After starring on the New York Jets for the past seven seasons, he signed a one-year, $5 million deal with a possible $3 million more in incentives.

The Packers new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine is very familiar with Wilkerson.

He led the Jets defense for the first two years of Wilkerson's career and was part of the process during the draft in which New York took him with the 30th overall pick.

Muhammad Wilkerson has been durable throughout his seven-year career, missing just seven total games.

He missed three games in 2017, however, the most games he has ever missed in a season.

The Packers were depending on Wilkerson to help a defense that has struggled in past seasons.

His presence on the line opened up everyone else and was hoped to have a positive effect on Clay Matthews and the other Packers linebackers.

The Packers were 26th in the NFL defensively last season, giving up 24.0 points per game.

So far this season, Green Bay has given up 26.0 points per game and that number may go up if Wilkerson is out for an extended period of time.
