The Green Bay Packers’ release of long-tenured wide receiver Jordy Nelson this offseason has had quite an effect on the team's offensive players. It did not please quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who had a close bond with Nelson. Nelson’s departure also had a profound influence on fellow wideout Randall Cobb, who was the other main candidate to get cut from the team.

Cobb admits that Nelson’s release was “an emotional roller-coaster” and has planted seeds of uncertainty regarding his future.

“There was nothing for me (to do). I didn’t know what was going to happen, and even at this point, I still don’t know. I mean, I’ve seen guys leave right before the season starts,” Cobb said per Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin. “You’re never in the clear. I think there’s always, you always have to have some kind of fear of something happening. Anything can happen, whether it be in the middle of the season being traded, or being cut at any given time. That’s the nature of the business that we’re in.”

Due to a mixture of injuries, poor play, and Aaron Rodgers’ absence, Cobb has seen his production dip over the past three seasons. That’s why his status on the team was-and possibly still is-under threat.

It’s wise for Cobb not to take anything for granted. As he witnessed this offseason, it’s never safe to assume job security in the NFL. Even if he rehabilitates his reputation and has a better season following his recent run of down years, he may still not be completely safe. It’s the sad reality of the league, but it’s something players must come to grips with nonetheless.
