Rashan Gary was drafted by the Green Bay Packers with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was met with quite a few mixed reactions, but most fans have now come around to the selection.

Just a short time after being drafted, Gary has made even more waves in Green Bay. He requested to wear Clay Matthews' old number 52 and his wish was granted. Matthews even took to Twitter to share his feelings about his jersey number already being given away.

In a quote shared by Pro Football Talk, Gary explained why he requested the number and it comes back to the number three that he wore in college.

“Five minus 2 equals 3. I wore 3 in college,” Gary said. “But Clay Matthews was a guy I used to watch his game a lot. I’m a bigger type of guy, but watching what he used to do, his passion for the game, man, I loved it. As soon as I saw it was open, I had to take it.”

Gary also explained that he respects Matthews and the career that he had in Green Bay.

“Coming to an organization like this, you understand the players that play here before you and the standard that you need to uphold,” Gary said. “Every time I wear that 52, it means a lot to me.”

Green Bay is hoping to see Gary unlock his full potential. If he is able to do that, the Packers will be getting a superstar. His physical ability and athleticism are obvious and he has a great work ethic and motor as well.

It will be interesting to see how he develops over the next few years in the No. 52 jersey.
