If you asked Green Bay Packers team president Mark Murphy about Matt LaFleur's performance before his debut head-coaching season, you'd probably get a chuckle and a shrug of a shoulder. LaFleur was such an unproven commodity that it was hard to figure out where the team will finish this season.

Fortunately for Green Bay, things went well as the Packers fell short to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship. Murphy admitted that he didn't expect this level of success with only a season's worth of leadership.

Murphy revealed that he was slightly hopeful that LaFleur could turn things around after the Packers missed out on two consecutive playoff berths. However, he was delightfully surprised when LaFleur exceeded his expectations.

“Yeah, honestly, I was a little surprised,” Murphy said, via Rob Reischel of Forbes. “I was hopeful and I thought [LaFleur] would do well. But, obviously, you look back through the history of the Packers, no other first-year head coach had the kind of success that he did. So that obviously speaks well of him. Obviously with our history, when you do something that’s never been done it speaks pretty well of what you’ve accomplished.”

Such praise going the way of a rookie head coach is usually good news. This means that the Packers will fully support him in his pursuit of players in the offseason to bolster the team and maybe make a run for the Super Bowl in 2020.

With the way things are shaping up, the Packers are only a couple of pieces away from building a championship roster. LaFleur is a big part of that.
