There is plenty of speculation regarding the future of Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews. It appears he could be on his way out of town if his price tag goes a little too high for their taste.

Matthews is set to hit the market as a free agent this offseason. According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, Green Bay does not plan on getting in a bidding war in order to retain his services:

He has been a productive player for the Packers — and GM Brian Gutekunst said last week at the combine that he thinks Matthews still can be that — but he's no longer a dominant pass-rusher off the edge. So what's his value? That's the hard part, which is why the Packers probably will let him test the market before they make an offer. Same thing for receiver Randall Cobb, who's coming off an injury-filled season as he heads into free agency.

Prediction: Chances are someone will make Matthews an offer richer than anything the Packers will pay, and he'll be gone.

The Packers had reportedly expressed interest in bringing Matthews back. After all, he is one of the most decorated players in franchise history and has long served as a staple in their defense despite his recent struggles. However, it seems they would rather allocate some of that money toward filling their other voids on both sides of the ball.

There is no question that Matthews is hardly the player he used to be. The former six-time Pro Bowler is coming off a disappointing 2018 campaign after finishing with just 43 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Although he has experienced a dip in production, his skill set as an edge rusher should still help him garner a solid price tag this offseason for the veteran.
