The Green Bay Packers are set to play their final preseason game of the year on Thursday night, but the team is still adding to its roster even before then by signing guard Dejon Allen to their open spot on the roster, according to Pro Football Talk.

Thanks to the open spot, no corresponding move needed to be made, and Allen can join the team right away. Allen went undrafted in 2018 and signed with the Chicago Bears, where he spent the year not he team’s practice squad before being waived this season.

Allen, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound guard, started 49 games in 50 appearances during his time at the University of Hawaii. Allen also earned all-conference honors in his last three seasons, and actually visited the Packers prior to the 2018 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Allen, there seems to be almost no chance he’ll be available tonight, meaning he’ll be a long shot for the actual 53-man roster of the Packers.

While Allen likely won’t be making the final roster, he could be a decent candidate for the team’s practice squad if they like him enough.

Also likely is the fact that the Packers are trying to gain a minimal edge against the Chicago Bears, who they open the season with next week. Signing a former player – even if it’s a practice squad player – could give them some insight into how the Bears plan to operate.

Of course, with the deadline for teams to trim their rosters down to 53 fast approaching, the Packers could also just to be trying to secure any and all players they might like prior to their regular-season opener next week.

Only time will tell if Allen makes the cut to either part of the Packers, but for now, he’ll at the very least a couple of days with his new team before finding out what happens.
