The New York Yankees and San Diego Padres have agreed to a trade. The Bronx Bombers lost one of their bombers in the deal, sending slugger Luke Voit to the Padres for pitching prospect Justin Lange, according to MLB Network Insider Jon Heyman.

The Padres were in need of a now power bat in their lineup and hope that Voit can fill that void for them. He joins Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Eric Hosmer in what would have been an imposing lineup. However, Tatis Jr. and the Padres were dealt a tough blow this offseason with news that the superstar needed wrist surgery. He will likely miss the first three months of the season.

It remains to be seen which Luke Voit the Padres are going to get. In 2019, Voit broke out with a solid year for the Yankees, hitting 21 home runs playing only part of the time. Then in the shortened 2020 season due to COVID, Voit took it to another level. He hit 22 bombs in only 56 games, while hitting a career-high .277.

But last year, Voit fell off a cliff. He hit .239 with 11 home runs and 35 runs batted in. He missed a large portion of the season with numerous injuries. That's been one of his biggest problems, is staying healthy. Voit missed over 100 games due to injury since he was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018.

The other side of the trade sees a former first-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. He was taken 34th overall by the Padres and was considered one of the best young pitching prospects in San Diego's farm system.

He struggled mightily though last year. Lange finished with an ERA of 6.95 and a very poor strikeout to walk ratio. But he did only start nine games and is still very young at 21 years of age.
