The San Diego Padres have reportedly narrowed down the list of candidates for their managerial opening, and Jon Heyman of MLB Network says that numerous sources around the league expect the team to hire Texas Rangers player development field coordinator Jayce Tingler:

The Padres began the search for a new manager after firing Andy Green in the final days of the 2019 season.

Tingler has served in a multitude of roles in the Rangers organization. He was a manager for Texas' affiliates in the Dominican Summer League and the Arizona Fall League, and he has also been an assistant GM as well as an interim bench coach.

The Padres were also considered a potential favorite to land former Cubs manager Joe Maddon, but Maddon agreed to return to the Los Angeles Angels, where he began his career as a minor leaguer and a coach.

San Diego is also considering former Rangers manager Ron Washington, who led Texas to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2011 and 2012.

Although the Padres suffered their ninth straight losing season and won just 70 games in 2019, they offer one of the most appealing gigs on the market.

San Diego has the best farm system in the bigs, and rookies like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Chris Paddack proved that they are already All-Star caliber players.

Not to mention, general manager A.J. Preller signaled his determination to win now by signing Manny Machado last winter, and the indications are that the Padres will be major players in the race to land an elite starting pitcher this winter.
