The entire San Diego Padres fanbase was left holding its breath when superstar third baseman Manny Machado went down with an ankle injury in the first inning against the Rockies on Sunday. Machado was down in pain and needed the training staff to help him limp off the field. After undergoing X-rays on his ankle, the Padres have revealed that Machado is dealing with a sprained ankle, per Annie Heilbrunn.

That's a relief for Padres fans as there was some concern that he may have fractured the ankle. Fortunately, the X-rays came back negative and it's merely a sprain for Machado. Still, he could be placed on the IL in order to recover despite having avoided a more serious injury.

He sustained the injury in the top of the first inning after attempting to run out a ground ball. Machado tweaked the ankle after taking a long lunge towards first base, after which he was removed from the game and replaced by Sergio Alcantara.

Machado has been enjoying an MVP-caliber season for the Padres. Across his first 65 games, the 29-year-old has a .949 OPS with 12 home runs and 46 RBI. With the Padres looking to make a run for the top spot in the NL West, the injury to Machado comes at a rough time, but they will look to stay on course even if he needs a brief IL stint.

The Padres dodged a bullet with the update on Machado, as it looks like he's out of the woods on what could have been far worse of an injury.
