The San Diego Padres are looking to buff up the lineup and may turn to a veteran who was just recently made available. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Padres are nearing an agreement to sign former Mets infielder Robinson Cano following his DFA from the team earlier this month.

Heyman indicates that, while no deal is official, his sources suggest that the two sides are closing in on an agreement. It's a bit of a surprising link between Cano and the Padres, especially considering San Diego only just sent CJ Abrams back down to the minor leagues, but perhaps they feel Cano's veteran leadership can provide value.

The Mets clearly felt they were better off without him, however, stomaching $40 million in order to part ways with him and free up a roster spot. In 12 games this season, Cano slashed .195/.233/.268 with 1 home run and 3 RBI. He struck out 11 times in 41 at-bats, recording a total of 8 hits. The 17-year veteran is no longer the superstar second baseman he was during his prime, but he can still be a valuable addition to a contending team.

San Diego currently sits at 20-12 in second place in the National League West Division, just 1.5 games behind the Dodgers. Any deal for Cano would most likely see him occupy a bench role, where he could serve as the occasional DH or a pinch-hitter. With the Padres hoping to contend for a World Series this year, they're leaving no stone unturned as they look to create the best possible roster for success in 2022.
