The San Diego Padres made some big moves last offseason and were aiming to make a huge splash during the regular season. Things didn't go to plan, unfortunately, and the Padres failed to even reach the playoffs, finishing third in their own division at 79-83. In order to compete with the Giants and the Dodgers, the Padres feel there are still improvements to be made, and one area they are keen to address is at first base. According to The Athletic's Dennis Lin, the Padres are reportedly interested in trading for Athletics' slugger Matt Olson.

Olson is set to hit free agency in a couple of seasons, at which point it's considered unlikely he'd remain in Oakland. With that said, the Athletics are reportedly open to trading him, though it would require a significant haul. While the Padres are interested in bringing Olson to town, Lin notes that a deal for the slugger would be difficult to maneuver, unless they somehow managed to offload the heinous contract they handed to Eric Hosmer.

Hosmer signed an infamous eight-year, $144 million deal with the Padres in 2018. He's due to make $21 million in 2022, and still has three additional years on his contract. It's worth noting that Hosmer has a player opt-out after this year, though there's little-to-no chance that he would turn down that type of money.

Hosmer's contract, at least, was front-loaded. While he will have made more than $105 million through the first five years of the deal, he will be considerably more tradeable (though still not easy!) with the remaining three years and $39 million left on his deal after the 2022 campaign.

The possibility of Olson landing in San Diego remains a long shot, but it's certainly a possibility and something to keep an eye on as the slugger's market begins to take shape.
