The Carolina Panthers want a distraction out of the way as quickly as possible, and they are hoping a public apology from quarterback Cam Newton with regards to his recent controversial remark would nip the issue in the bud.

On Thursday, Newton finally apologized to what he describes as “extremely degrading and disrespectful” action, during a postgame presser following the Panthers’ win over the New England Patriots last Sunday.

It could be recalled that Newton said that “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes” in response to Charlotte Observer beat reporter Jourdan Rodrigue, who asked the quarterback about Devin Funchess and his route running.

Here are parts of what Newton said in the video:

“After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women. And to be honest, that was not my intention. If you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you.

“I'm a man who tries to be a positive role model to my community and tries to use my platform to inspire others. I take ownership to everything that comes with that. What I did was extremely unacceptable.”

Prior to this, it was reported that Panthers officials and Newton engaged each other in a discussion, probably to talk about what would be the best move for Newton. This apology was likely the decision both sides had arrived at.

Rodrigue has yet to react on Newton’s apology for his sexist comment. It’s worth noting, however, that Newton earlier reached out to the reporter, but Rodrigue didn’t seem ready to forgive Newton then.

With Newton finding himself at the center of a controversy, the Panthers could be finding it hard to focus on their game against the Detroit Lions this coming Sunday.
