Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has officially been ruled out for his team's Week 6 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday as he recovers from his foot injury, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Newton has missed each of the last three weeks, all of which have resulted in Panthers victories under the leadership of second-year signal-caller Kyle Allen.

Newton struggled mightily in Weeks 1 and 2, throwing for 572 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception while completing just 56.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 71.

Given his struggles dating back to the second half of last season, it's entirely possible that even if he gets healthy at some point in 2019, Allen will retain the starting job.

Carolina has gone 0-8 over Newton's last eight starts going back to 2018, while Allen has gone 4-0.

In three starts this season, Allen has thrown for 674 yards, five touchdowns, and no picks while completing 66.7 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 107.4.

Most importantly, Allen has vaulted the Panthers back into the playoff picture, as Carolina now finds itself in second place in the NFC South with a record of 3-2.

Newton has been hampered by injuries since the end of 2016 when he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder. The shoulder issue then flared up again during the second half of last year, resulting in the Panthers shutting Newton done for the final two games of 2018.

The 30-year-old then underwent another procedure on his shoulder this past offseason.

Since entering the NFL in 2011, Newton has made three Pro Bowls while also winning an MVP award.
