The Carolina Panthers recently designated quarterback Sam Darnold for return off of IR. The move comes after the Panthers' recent loss to the Atlanta Falcons, where head coach Matt Rhule benched starter Cam Newton for backup PJ Walker, only to bring Newton back into the game. Rhule stated plans to continue with the two-quarterback system, then threw those plans up into the air with a highly confusing press conference on Wednesday.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said that Sam Darnold, who missed four games with a fractured shoulder, has been cleared to throw but not cleared to practice. So, he's healthy but also not quite healthy?

If that wasn't confusing enough, Rhule then said he didn't even know if Darnold would be back for Carolina in 2021.

Huh? Rhule said he has “no idea” if Darnold will play for the Panthers again in 2021? What was the point of designating him for a return off the IR if he was just going to sit behind Cam Newton and PJ Walker anyway?

It sounds like Rhule doesn't know who the best option is out of Newton, Walker and Darnold for the Panthers. Judging by Rhule's comments, Panthers fans should expect some combination of Newton and Walker- and not Darnold- in Week 15 against the Buffalo Bills.

In just two quotes, Panthers head coach Matt Rhule made the quarterback situation between Cam Newton, Sam Darnold and PJ Walker a whole lot more confusing.
