Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton underwent arthroscopic surgery after hoping to avoid a procedure after the regular season ended, according to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Newton was shut down for the final two games of the regular season and it was likely the best option for the former MVP quarterback. Newton's final game of the season was back on the 17th of December and he looked completely out of sorts. The former number one overall pick was forcing every throw and was involving his lower body in his throwing motion.

Newton was throwing passes with a very awkward shoulder motion and it was increasingly clear that he was not himself.

This marks another surgery on his throwing shoulder and it's worth noting that there should be some cause for concern going forward. It's quite possible Newton will be fine after the surgery as he appeared to be earlier in the season, but as the season progressed the Panthers went on a huge losing streak. The six-game skid could very well be attributed to Newton's injury after starting the season 6-2.

Newton was playing at a high level prior to showing signs of shoulder issues, but it's worth noting he only passed for 300-plus yards three times in the 14 games he was able to play. Although he only played in 14 games, he had more yards this season than he had he did last season and still managed 24 passing touchdowns.

The trend is pointing in the direction that Newton may experience some form of discomfort in the future, but hopefully the recent procedure will set things straight for the incredibly talented quarterback.
