Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was given a broom last year. And it wasn't to sweep up some crumbs. Rather, it was a present the NFL South divisional rivals that swept the Panthers in three games last season. Newton is using New Orleans' pettiness as motivation for Monday night's game against Drew Brees and the Saints.

Newton claimed the gift was “disrespectful, disrespectful” that somebody would even consider sending it.

“I didn't take the pack[aging] off,” Newton told ESPN Thursday. “I'm going to resend it to the sender if everything gets taken care of the way we know we can do it.”

“Look,” Newton said, “at the end of the day, the Saints of this past year and this year — we all know what the Saints used to be. Let's not forget the real history. They got the juice [now]. At the end of the day, [we're] coming Monday with a cup for our own, too.”

Panthers head coach Mike Rivera did not have much to add but did offer the following, via ESPN.

“What's consequential to me is we're preparing and getting ready to play a football game on Monday,” Rivera said. “That's about all I can say about that.”

The Panthers have been a bit disappointing this season. They've lost five games in a row and are 6-7 on the season, a half of a game back on the Minnesota Vikings for a wild-card spot. The Panthers will play the Saints and Falcons at home the next two weeks, and will then play the Saints in New Orleans. These games are do or die for their playoff dreams.

Newton has thrown for 3,264 yards this season through 13 games, scoring 28 total touchdowns while giving up 12 interceptions.
