The key components of the Carolina Panthers' new coaching staff are college-based. The Panthers plucked Matt Rhule from Baylor to be their head coach; they got LSU's assistant coach phenom Joe Brady to run their offense as offensive coordinator.

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, the Panthers are looking to add more NFL experience to their coaching staff. Rhule has interviewed former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo and then-San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy for assistant coach jobs.

Rhule is seeking experience on his staff. That should come as no surprise, considering he lacks experience in the pros outside of coaching the New York Giants' offensive line in 2012. Last week, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported former Giants head coach and Jacksonville Jaguars executive Tom Coughlin is advising Rhule with his adjustment to the league.

It is unclear what position McAdoo and McCoy are interviewing for. It could be as an assistant head coach or on the offensive staff, perhaps quarterback coach, a position the Rhule-led staff has not hired yet.

McAdoo hasn't been on the NFL radar since the Giants fired him late into the 2017 season. After getting New York to 11-5 in 2016, the G-Men sank in 2017, going 2-10. He also infamously mishandled the benching of Eli Manning.

Like McAdoo, McCoy did not coach in 2019. He did not last the full 2018 season as the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator, leading one of the NFL's worst attacks. McCoy's Chargers recorded a 27-37 record between 2013 and 2016. They made the playoffs once under his watch, losing in the divisional round to the Denver Broncos.
