Baker Mayfield's future has still yet to become clear. After the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans, the obvious next step was finding a landing spot for Mayfield. That's not proving to be all that simple, however, as the potential destinations for Mayfield seem to quickly be drying up. The latest rumblings from Jeff Howe of The Athletic indicate that the Carolina Panthers are now out on Mayfield, despite still having a need at quarterback.

The Panthers were considered to be one of the few remaining landing spots for Mayfield this offseason, but it seems they're no longer interested in the former No. 1 overall pick. The Browns are rumored to be seeking a first-round pick in exchange for Mayfield, though that certainly feels optimistic given the current quarterback market.

It seems that the lack of interest between Mayfield and the Panthers is mutual. Pro Football Network reports that Mayfield has not expressed interest in joining Carolina, and the belief around the league is that the Browns QB isn't much of an upgrade over Sam Darnold.

With the Panthers now out on Mayfield, the pickings for the disgruntled quarterback are growing slimmer still. The Panthers' decision on Mayfield may indicate their intentions to select a quarterback early in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, having been linked to Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett. The Panthers reportedly sent a large conglomerate to Willis' Pro Day at Liberty on Tuesday, during which he impressed.

A Mayfield trade still feels extremely likely to go down, but the Browns may need to face the music and lower their asking price if they want to get anything done.
