Just when it looked like the Carolina Panthers were starting to turn things around, they were hit with some bad news on Tuesday.

According to Max Henson of the Panthers' team website, Carolina has placed defensive lineman Kawann Short on the injured reserve list due to a torn rotator cuff. Short will have to undergo surgery.

“KK has done everything he could possibly do to try to play these past two games, but we have made the decision that it is in the best long-term interest of KK and the team that he undergo surgery to fix his shoulder and focus on his rehab and get ready for next season,” said Panthers general manager Marty Hurney.

Short missed each of the last two games after suffering the injury in Week 2. He logged four tackles on the season.

The 30-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Purdue, was originally selected by the Panthers in the second round (44th pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He played in all 16 games during his rookie campaign, finishing with 35 tackles and 1.5 sacks. He then showed marginal improvement in 2014, totaling 46 tackles and 3.5 sacks.

It wasn't until Short's third season that he broke out, as he racked up 55 tackles, 11 sacks, three forced fumbles and a couple of fumble recoveries en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

He then made another Pro Bowl last year after recording 42 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble in 14 games.

Carolina has won its last two games to improve to 2-2. It will host the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.
