The honeymoon period of Cam Newton's return to Carolina Panthers feels like eons ago at this point. The former NFL MVP has lost all his four starts to virtually kill any hopes they had for making the postseason.

While questions remained for the Panthers' previous starter Sam Darnold before his stint on the IR, even the most fervent Cam Newton supporter must admit that the experiment has yielded undesirable results.

Cam Newton just isn't the player he once was. His inability to throw the ball downfield has been evident throughout his time as QB1, an issue that's plagued him even during his lone season with the New England Patriots. That's prompted the Panthers to turn their attention right back to Sam Darnold, who figures to play a significant role in their next game, and beyond.

Via Ian Rapoport:

While Cam Newton will start today against the Buccaneers, Darnold is expected to enter the game within a few series and, based on how he does, could play a substantial amount, sources say. Playing time will be determined based on the success Darnold is having, but don't be surprised if he cements himself as the starter over the final two games.

The Panthers' quarterback situation remains just as muddled as it's ever been. While they may be leaning one way for a signal-caller with their eye towards next season, neither option feels like the quarterback to take them back to postseason relevance. These last three weeks are still sure to entertain.
