The Carolina Panthers are nowhere near satisfied with their quarterback situation after gunslinger Teddy Bridgewater fell short of expectations in his debut season with the team. Head coach Matt Rhule and his squad are reportedly throwing themselves in the mix to acquire quarterback Deshaun Watson once the Houston Texans make him available for trade, per ESPN‘s David Newton.

Carolina already tried their luck by offering their No.8 overall pick, a fifth-round selection, along with Bridgewater in exchange for a veteran quarterback in Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions. Their trade package didn't turn heads as the Lions proceeded to deal with the Los Angeles Rams where they received a 2021 third-round pick, 2022 and 2023 first-round selections, and playmaker Jared Goff instead.

In what seems to be an effort to make a run for Watson, the Panthers released four players to clear a $19.9 million cap space heading to next season. The team already parted ways with defensive tackle Kawann Short, defensive end Stephen Weatherly, safety Tre Boston, and punter Michael Palardy which gave them a total cap space of $28.473 million.

As per Newton, Watson is projected to have a $15.94 million cap hit in the upcoming 2021 season before it balloons to $40.4 million come 2022. After merely settling for a 5-11 record in 2020, the Panthers are certainly going to make aggressive moves in the offseason to help them generate better campaigns moving forward.

Head coach Matt Rhule and his team are hoping that the moves are enough as they throw a long-shot bid to land the services of Deshaun Watson in order to turn things around for the Carolina-based squad.
