Ryan Kalil will have to continue his stellar playing career without his younger brother lining up two spots to his left. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Carolina Panthers have released veteran left tackle Matt Kalil.

Last season, the Kalils became only the third pair of brothers to ever play on the same offensive line, following in the footsteps of Jay and Joel Hilgenberg with the 1993 New Orleans Saints and Dave and Doug Widell with the early 1990s Denver Broncos. Unfortunately, their time playing together was limited to one season, due in large part to the financial ramifications of retaining him going forward.

The younger Kalil signed a five-year, $55 million deal with the Panthers during the 2017 offseason, a deal that included $25 million in guaranteed money. Paid like one of the league's upper-echelon left tackles, Kalil, a top-five pick in 2012, struggled immensely during his one healthy season in Carolina, as Pro Football Focus ranked him the 53rd best offensive tackle in football.

There was some optimism that the healing of a nagging hip injury would allow Kalil to play better going forward, but those hopes were dashed when he began experiencing pain in his right knee during the 2018 preseason. After meeting with famed sports physician Dr. James Andrews and undergoing arthroscopic surgery, Kalil was placed on injured reserve last August and never re-activated to the roster.

According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, the Panthers will owe $14.7 million in dead money as a result of releasing Kalil. Second-year pro Taylor Moton took his place at starting left tackle, quickly establishing himself as one of the game's most promising offensive lineman.
