The Carolina Panthers have selected defensive tackle Derrick Brown with the 7th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

As expected, Brown , considered as the best athlete in his class, went early in the first round and the Auburn Tigers alum is expected to beef up a Panthers defensive line that has allowed the fourth-most total rushing yards (2,296), most rushing yards per attempt (5.2), and most first downs by rushing (128) in the 2019 season.

Brown has impressed scouts early on in his football career and was considered as a five-star recruit from Lanier High School in Georgia. In his four years with Auburn, Brown has recorded 12.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles.

On paper, Brown's selection makes all the sense in the world for the Panthers; he has garnered praise both from fans and executives alike.

“He may not have the greatest stats in the world, but he helps other players make plays,” said Panthers GM Marty Hurney to ESPN’s Dan Graziano.

His defensive prowess has earned him a nod in the 2019 All-SEC Football Team. The Panthers know that Brown has likewise been named as the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

The 6”5’, 317-pound behemoth has also made his presence felt at the pre-draft combine with 28 bench press reps. Brown’s huge presence is expected to make an immediate impact with the Panthers with his intimidating stature.

“I thought he played with tremendous effort. He can really re-set the line of scrimmage with his power,” stated Daniel Jeremiah of the Panthers’ newest acquisition.

Look for Derrick Brown to be a regular in defensive highlight reels.
