The Carolina Panthers tried to trade Cam Newton to the Chicago Bears and Los Angeles Chargers but couldn't find any interest, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

The Bears already traded for Nick Foles, and it seems the Chargers are pretty content with Tyrod Taylor, so it makes sense both teams wouldn't want to give up draft capital and pay Newton over $19 million for the 2020 season.

The Panthers only incur $2 million in dead cap money with his release, and whatever team signs him now should save a lot of money with his new contract.

Newton was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft by the Panthers, and he quickly became one of the most polarizing figures in all the NFL. Newton led the Panthers to three straight NFC South titles and a Super Bowl appearance.

After so much success, the last three years have been tough for Newton as he has dealt with different injuries. Newton has undergone a couple of shoulder surgeries, and in 2019, it was a foot injury that ultimately cost him the season.

With the big payday for the 2020 season and so many questions surrounding his health, the Panthers felt like they had no other choice but to move on from him.

The Panthers signed free agent Teddy Bridgewater to be their starting quarterback going forward, and the hope is that he, along with Matt Rhule, can give the offense some consistency since that has been missing the last few years.

Only time will tell if the Panthers made the right decision.
