Cam Newton's future with the Carolina Panthers may not fit with what has been previously perceived. Panthers owner David Tepper spoke to local media on Monday, announcing that there has not been a decision made on Newton's future with the team or if he will have surgery or not, per Alaina Getzenberg of The Charlotte Observer.

Tepper did say that if Newton is healthy, he hopes that he will stay in Charlotte, citing that it would be good for both sides.

The Panthers placed Newton on the injured reserve two weeks with a Lisfranc injury. He has not played since Week 2's Thursday night loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though there was once the potential for him to return in 2019, that will not happen.

Tepper proclaimed that the Panthers would not have inserted Newton into the lineup even if they were losing. If the team were on the brink of the playoffs, he would not play. For the owner, it does not make sense to play a player hampered by the severe injury.

Newton went under the knife for shoulder surgery in the offseason. He suffered the foot injury in the third week of the preseason, against the Los Angeles Chargers. On the year, the 2015 MVP passed for 572 yards, no touchdowns and an interception on a 56.2% completion rate. He lost both of his games as a starter.

Currently, the Panthers have second-year University of Houston product Kyle Allen as the starter. Allen has thrown for 1,923 yards, 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions on a 61.6% completion rate while going 5-3 as a starter.
