Former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart has officially decided to call it a career. Fellow running back Christian McCaffrey could not be more appreciative of his former teammate.

Stewart and McCaffrey spent a season together in what has now essentially turned out to be a passing of the torch. The latter took the opportunity to post a heartfelt message, via the team's official Twitter:

“Just want to give a huge shoutout to 28, J-Stew on an unbelievable career,” said McCaffrey. “It's pretty awesome what he's meant for the city of Charlotte, for all Panthers Nation out there. It was an honor to play with him, it was an honor to get to learn from him, even just for a year. I can't wait to try to follow in his footsteps. Stew, keep pounding man. We love you.”

Stewart played for the New York Giants after playing 10 seasons with the Panthers, who he retired with, There is no question that Stewart's presence will be heavily missed in Carolina moving forward. He has long served as the Panthers' workhorse and sustained all the ups and downs this team has gone through over the years. He has managed to leave the backfield in a much better place than he found it at the beginning of his career.

It is safe to say that Stewart has left it in good hands with McCaffrey. He has established himself as one of the NFL's premier workhorse running backs thanks to his versatile skill set as both a runner and a receiver. Although the Panthers have indicated that they would like to lighten his heavy workload, he will remain as the focal point of the offense moving forward.
