Carolina Panthers second-year running back Christian McCaffrey made history against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon, becoming only the third player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards and catch 100 passes in the same season, according to NFL Research.

McCaffrey joins former Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte and former San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson as the only three players to ever accomplish the feat.

On the year, McCaffrey has totaled 1,062 rushing yards and 103 receptions, outstanding numbers for any player, let alone one in his sophomore season. McCaffrey has also scored seven touchdowns as a rusher and six as a receiver.

The 22-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Stanford University, was originally selected by the Panthers with the eighth overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

He actually had a relatively disappointing rookie campaign as a rusher, finishing with just 435 yards and two scores, averaging a mere 3.7 yards per carry. However, he demonstrated his ability as a pass-catcher, hauling in 80 receptions for 651 yards while reaching the end zone five times.

Carolina as a team has been a massive disappointment this season.

After a 6-2 start to the year, the Panthers looked primed to contend in the NFC, but they have since lost eight games in a row and have now shut down quarterback Cam Newton for the remainder of the season due to shoulder issues.

Carolina will also miss the playoffs for the second time in three years. The Panthers made the postseason last year, winning 11 games but then falling in the Wild Card Round to the New Orleans Saints.
