Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey will be held out for the second consecutive game, according to the team.

The Panthers officially ruled McCaffrey out for this weekend's game against the Detroit Lions after suffering a shoulder injury in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mike Davis is likely to get another start in CMC's absence.

McCaffrey has hardly been able to get going this year after being named First-Team All-Pro last season.

The former Stanford star tallied four rushing touchdowns in the first two games of the year. But McCaffrey suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, forcing him out of the next six games.

However, things were trending in the right direction when McCaffrey was able to suit up against the Chiefs. He immediately left his mark on the game, tallying 151 yards from scrimmage — including 10 catches for 82 yards — and two total touchdowns. McCaffrey's big day nearly helped the Panthers secure a win over the defending champs.

Unfortunately for Carolina, the star running back also picked up the shoulder injury. He was ruled out for Week 10 against the Bucs pretty much from the jump. There was early optimism McCaffrey would return for Week 11, but the Panthers will exhibit caution after falling to 3-7 following last weekend's loss to Tampa Bay.

McCaffrey signed a lucrative extension with Carolina this past offseason, so it makes sense for the Panthers to protect their investment given they are out of playoff contention.
