Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey had quite the workload last season, and it's expected to be the same way this season with maybe one change, he might not be on the field as much. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said on Wednesday that he expects McCaffrey will have about as many touches as last year, but the team might cut down on how many plays he is on the field to try and keep him fresh.

Rivera said that when McCaffrey is on the field, there is no reason for him to be a decoy, he should be involved with the play, via Brendan Marks of The Charlotte Observer.

“The goal is to cut down on his plays, but we’re not going to take away his touches,” Rivera said after training camp practice Wednesday at Wofford College. “We want the ball in Christian’s hands. When he’s on the field, there’s no reason for him to be a decoy or be a swing guy.

“That’s what coach Norv (Turner) wants to do. He basically said that the other day when he talked to you guys: We don’t want to take away the touches. What we want to do is take away the excess plays that he doesn’t have to be out there.”

Last season McCaffrey had a total of 326 touches and a total of 1965 yards and 13 touchdowns. With Cam Newton back to full strength a little pressure should be off McCaffrey to carry the team, but he is still going to be a big key if this team wants to make it back to the playoffs.
