Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy hinted that quarterback Cam Newton played a role in him choosing to sign with his new team.

McCoy made his choice on Monday after also considering the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns, with reports suggesting that the Ravens may have been the frontrunner late in the process.

However, it appears that the Panthers were able to put together an appealing package for the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star, and that helped convince him to stay in the division he's most familiar with.

And McCoy commented that he's happy to not have to chase Newton around while also mentioning that the two had conversations during the process.

There's no doubt that the addition of McCoy should give the Panthers a big boost heading into next season, as the franchise will look to get back on track after a disappointing finish a season ago.

Of course, it's also obvious that McCoy will be excited to get two shots at the former team that released him.

Carolina will host the Bucs win a Week 2 matchup in Charlotte before the rematch takes place in Week 6 in London.

While it may have been more thrilling for McCoy to walk into Raymond James Stadium as a member of the Panthers, he'll still likely be wanting to bring his best when he goes up against his new divisional foe.
