Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen came to the defense of his quarterback Cam Newton on Sunday after the former Auburn Tiger star was called out by former teammate Kelvin Benjamin. Benjamin told The Athletic that he would have been better off never coming to the Panthers and that he wished he had a quarterback who was more accurate and had a better “knowledge” of the game.

Olsen has no idea where the comments from Benjamin came from and was caught a bit off guard by them.

“It's kind of weird,” Olsen said via ESPN. “We all wish Kelvin the best. Obviously, things change. Again, we've talked at length about how guys around here feel about Cam. Obviously, you don't like people going after your quarterback.

“But Cam knows how the guys feel here about him. I would imagine that's what he holds the most credence to.”

At times Newton has been criticized because of his completion percentage but that hasn't stopped Olsen from really enjoying his time together. Olsen has enjoyed some of the best years of his career with Newton and wants to remind everyone his quarterback is an MVP.

“He was the MVP, wasn't he?” Olsen reminded of Newton's 2015 season. “Just in general, you play with an MVP quarterback. There's like four or five of them in the league, right?

“Obviously, you know how I feel and how we feel about Cam, which I think right now is all that matters. … People have opinions. That's just the world of today.'

It's really not a surprise that Newton's teammates are standing up for him although it's still odd that Benjamin felt it necessary to take shots at his former quarterback.

Olsen will have a chance to speak face-to-face with his former teammate when the Panthers visit Benjamin and the Bills in their preseason opener on Thursday night.
