The Carolina Panthers have signed quarterback Kyle Allen to a one-year contract extension, according to the team.

Allen was set to become an exclusive rights free agent this month.

The 24-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Texas A&M and the University of Houston, went undrafted in 2018 but eventually landed with the Panthers.

He appeared in two games and made one start in 2018, completing 20 his 31 throws for 266 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Then, this past season, Allen became Carolina's starter in Week 3 following a foot injury to Cam Newton. He proceeded to win each of his first four starts, but for the remainder of the year, Allen labored.

Ultimately, the Scottsdale, Az. native threw for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while completing 62 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 80.

Due to Allen's struggles during the second half of the season, he was displaced as the starter by Will Grier for the final two games of the 2019 campaign.

As of right now, most have Newton pegged as the Panthers' starter for 2020. With Carolina owning the seventh overall pick in the draft next month, some feel the club will end up taking a quarterback.

However, Allen will be on the roster for at least one more year. Given he has at least shown he can be a capable backup, he will certainly have some value to the team next season.

The Panthers went just 5-11 in 2019, marking their worst finish since winning only two games back in 2010.
