The Carolina Panthers are hoping that Cam Newton will return to his MVP-form again in 2019 after a shoulder injury derailed his season last year. On Monday, Ron Rivera gave an insight on how Newton has progressed with his shoulder injury.

This is good news for Panthers fans as it seems Newton is well on his way to play in Week 1. Throughout the offseason, Carolina has been cautious with their franchise quarterback as he works his way back onto the field.

In 2018, Newton and the Panthers began the season with a 6-2 record and were on their way to securing a spot in the playoffs. Then, in a Week 10 showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers; their season was buried after Newton took a devastating hit from T.J. Watt.

Following the hit, Newton suffered an injury to his throwing shoulder but continued to play through it. Unfortunately, the injury became noticeably worse as the season progressed. In the end, Rivera was forced to shut down his All-Pro quarterback for the rest of the year.

As a result, Carolina finished the season with a 7-9 record and failed to reach the postseason. Shortly after the 2018 season concluded, the larger-than-life quarterback underwent shoulder surgery on his throwing shoulder.

Newton made his return to practice in training camp but he had to re-learn his throwing motion following the surgery. The Panthers signal-caller made his preseason debut against the New England Patriots in Week 3 of the preseason.

Just a few series into the game, Newton sustained a mid-foot sprain that provided a scare for the team. Rivera seems confident that his veteran quarterback will be ready to go in Week 1 and is continually getting better.

Newton will need to be as close to a hundred percent as possible in Week 1 against Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams.
