The Carolina Panthers have shifted more of their focus toward helping star quarterback Cam Newton take the next step in becoming a more effective passer.

This has seen the franchise make a move to bring in an established offensive coordinator in Norv Turner to aid that process in developing more consistency on Newton's throws and better decision making. Head coach Ron Rivera has voiced that former league MVP has taken strides forward in that effort, according to David Newton of ESPN.

“The one thing he's done consistently is make good decisions all through training camp,” Rivera said of Newton.

There is a sense of confidence in Newton that he can continue to stay on this path of improving his play on the field as he has had notable struggles as a passer. The fact that he's a dual-threat quarterback that can highly impact the game with his legs, it has taken some of the pressure off him from for his shortcomings throwing the ball. However, the Panthers want him to make that next step forward as a passer, which has led to them bringing in a proven offensive mind in Turner.

The goal for Carolina is to see Newton become a more accurate passer that the team believes he can complete between 65 to 70 percent of his passes while improving on his decision making in the process. The 29-year-old has the physical tools to be a special quarterback; it's just simply him taking the next step toward being a more dependable option under center throwing the ball.

It is an ongoing process, but the Panthers have plenty of confidence that he can show some improvement in that aspect of his game heading into his eighth season in the league. These next few weeks of training camp and the preseason could help him moving forward on that front.
